How many agents have contacted you—called, texted, emailed—in the last 30 days to say they want to work for you? If that number is four or five, or even more, congratulations! You're in a position where you're attracting agents to your company. That’s a rare position to be in, and not many offices can say the same.
But if you're not attracting a lot of people, the question becomes: why not? There could be many reasons, but the number one thing we need to focus on is building a company that is attractive.
It sounds simple, but it's not. There are many factors involved. Agent productivity, the training and education you offer, and how your company appears from the outside all matter.
Do you have a great culture?
Are your agents engaged in the community?
Is your company active on social media?
Do you have a YouTube channel?
Do you have a great office environment?
Being a visible leader in the MLS and the market helps too. Your agents should be out there, talking positively about your company.
So, how do you bring all of this together? It’s a step-by-step, day-by-day process. Start by understanding this: the only reason someone will come to work for you in the beginning—when you have zero agents like I did—is because of your vision.
I started with zero agents and grew it to 17 offices.
How do you go from zero to where you want to be?
The first step is having a vision. The vision is what inspires people to join you, even if you don’t have everything built yet. The vision is what you share with people when you’re recruiting, explaining what you’re trying to build.
People buy into vision all the time. Think about companies like Apple, Amazon, FedEx, and Google. They all started with someone’s vision. It didn’t happen overnight—they had to sell their vision to many people to bring it to life.
For us, it’s the same. When you're out there recruiting, share your vision. Tell them, "This is what I have today, but this is what I’m building." If you're excited, enthusiastic, and clear about your vision, people will want to be part of it.
They’ll want to be on the ground floor, at the foundational level.
But you’ve got to have a vision.
Don’t just open a door and hope someone will come to work for you. There are a million companies out there, and agents can choose any of them. They’ll only work for leaders with vision.
So, decide today—what’s your vision? Write it down. Create a paragraph, or even a page, about what you’re trying to build that’s unique and makes you stand out in your market.
