What single skill, if mastered impeccably, could significantly impact your real estate career over the next year?

Take a moment and consider the answer.

I often pose this question to various agents, and the responses vary widely. Some say lead generation, others cite video creation, social media marketing, listing presentations, buyer interactions, showings, negotiation— the list goes on.

However, these responses reveal a common thread— a lack of confidence in that particular area. This deficiency in confidence is evident to clients and impedes your true potential.

So how do you remedy this situation?

Here's my solution:

Confidence originates from competence.

You must become proficient in the skill you're tackling. And how do you achieve competence? Through practice, continuous and deliberate practice. Malcolm Gladwell delves into this concept in his book "Outliers." The top performers in various fields, be it sports, music, writing, or business, have a distinctive trait: they've dedicated 10,000 hours to practicing their craft. This principle underscores the fact that excellence is built upon a mountain of failures, as each misstep teaches us invaluable lessons.

Now, let's apply this to real estate:

Consider lead generation—say, mastering "For Sale By Owner" outreach. How many calls have you made? How many expired listings have you pursued? How many conversations with absentee owners or builders have you engaged in? Mastery emerges from consistent, targeted action.

While this path isn't easy and failures are inevitable, success leaves behind clues. We can learn from those who've walked before us, adapting their strategies to our journey. This doesn't guarantee an effortless process, but it streamlines it. To significantly elevate your performance within a year, commit wholeheartedly to practicing relentlessly in your chosen area. Whether it's "For Sale By Owner" prospecting, social media, video creation, or listing presentations, immerse yourself in practicing for hours on end. With this commitment, you'll transition from good to great and from great to excellent.

Here's a trick: allocate time and schedule it diligently. Remember, I schedule what I intend to do. If it's not on my schedule, it doesn't get done.

Let's dive into listing presentations. Acknowledge that taking listings is pivotal. Now, ponder this: How much time have you dedicated to practicing your listing presentation? A mere five hours? Maybe ten? For most agents, it's likely less than that.

Beating the competition doesn't demand becoming the best in the world; it involves surpassing others in your market. A competitive edge can often be achieved by practicing for just ten hours on your listing presentation. You don't need to outshine everyone; you just need to excel in your marketplace.

Embrace this principle across your business, and you'll experience a complete transformation. It's time to elevate your confidence through competence, and practice is the path to mastering your chosen skill set.
