What To Do After a Potential Brokerage Recruit Suddenly Goes Cold

 

You might’ve had a call where you had a great conversation with a potential recruit—someone you thought would join your company—and then suddenly they went cold. They didn’t join.

What happened?

Well, it’s not about your offer. It’s not about you, what you said, or didn’t say. It’s about their timing. Timing is unique for every agent. Every agent has a runway—that is, the time it takes for them to join your firm. Some have a short runway, some a long one, and others a really long runway.

It’s not about your timeline; it’s about theirs. And here’s the key: the fortune is in the follow-up. But you don’t want to apply pressure.

Here’s what the worst recruiter does: “Jim, we’ve got to get you over here. Let’s make it happen!”

That approach is all about your needs, not theirs.

People often have legitimate reasons they can’t make a change right now. They may have things going on in their world—deals, listings, personal matters—that make it logistically impossible. If you make it about you, you’ll push them further away.

Instead, take the pressure off. Say something like:

“Hey, listen, I’m here. Whether you want to join today, next week, next month, or even next year, I’ll be here. I’m in this for the long haul, and I want you on our team when the timing is right for you.”

The reason many recruiters feel the need to close quickly is that they don’t have a pipeline. And they don’t have a pipeline is that they’re not recruiting every single day.

When you recruit daily, you’ll realize that people will join on their own timeline. It’s not about closing someone today—it’s about doing the work consistently. The results will come if you’re consistent.

So, what’s your follow-up strategy? What are you doing to stay in touch with these people? Are you making calls, sending texts, video messages, or having conversations?

The goal is to become someone they like. People don’t just work for companies—they work for people they like.

Elevate your relationships to true friendships. People come to work for friends. Stop being transactional and start being relational. Build genuine connections, and you’ll unlock the floodgates to your recruiting success.
